Nha Trang is a lively, quite touristy city located right by the sea. The beach is huge, sandy and almost completely deserted. After checking in, we went for a walk around town. It was the kids' first experience of the bedlam that is driving in SE Asia. There are over 40 million motorbikes in Vietnam and at times it feels like they are all converged on the same roundabout at once. The kids have started a game of spotting the most people they can see on a single motorbike - the record at the moment is 5 but I have a funny feeling we'll seem more before the end of our trip! Beeping is a very active part of driving in Asia - instead of being like shouting at someone it more means "I'm coming - just making sure you see me - please don't suddenly swerve". So roads are a cacophony of beeps, day and night. Crossing the road is something of an adventure - they do paint pedestrian crossings on the road at certain junctions but in practice they have no meaning whatsoever. You can try to cross there but you still get completely ignored by oncoming traffic so you might as well cross wherever suits. We've learnt that once you start crossing, just keep walking at the same pace. Don't even look at the oncoming traffic as that may tempt you so stop or speed up. But if you make steady progress, the sea of motorbikes simply part around you and amazingly enough you make it across unscathed. Although somewhat touristy, Nha Trang was once again free of hawkers hassling tourists which make it very pleasant walking around exploring. We took in a Buddhist temple (though Helen was denied entry because her dress stopped at the knee rather than below it - well if she will dress like a floozy what does she expect?!) with both a giant reclined Buddha and a sitting one at the top of hill with lovely views over the city. By the time we'd walked back towards home for dinner the kids were pretty exhausted but I think keeping them busy was the key to keeping them awake long enough to tackle the jet-lag. Quick dinner and bed by 8pm for all of us for a much needed sleep.
