It was a short but fun stopover in Nha Trang but then we were off for a 2 hour drive followed by a short boat ride to Whale Island. We're still none the wiser as to why it's called Whale Island as it doesn't look like one and there aren't any whales there, but it's a lovely little island resort of about 15 little beach bungalows in a secluded sandy bay with coral reefs. And wonderfully without any mobile phone coverage and only a very small and patchy wifi hotspot! The bungalows were colonial in style - ceiling fans and 4-poster beds with mosquito nets. They had a little sandy garden in front and then down 3 steps to the sea - despite having visited the Maldives and Bora Bora I don't think I've ever seen a better set-up to simply walk out and go for a swim or snorkel. We had french families with kids of similar ages either side of our bungalow so the kids simply adored the set up. One morning we went on a boat trip to snorkel a larger reef about 35mins away - the reef was stunning but there were so few fish compared to protected reefs such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Fishing is a huge industry in Vietnam and unfortunately due to over-fishing, the seas are now low on fish and quite polluted with plastics. If they are not careful they will destroy one of their own best natural resources. But it's difficult for us to judge when fishing is such an important part of their economy. After a couple of wonderfully relaxed days we were now pretty much over our jet-lag and somewhat reluctantly, ready to return to civilisation. We left whale island just as a storm was arriving (nice timing!) and headed by car cross country 4 hours to Dalat.
