Arrived in Ho Chi Minh airport at 5.30am having had about 2 hours sleep each. In fairness to the kids they did really try to sleep but it's hard a) being excited and b) because body time is the middle of the day. So we basically all had a nap on the 11-hour flight from Zurich. We didn't see anyone with face masks on the flight but about 5% of the passenger put them on as soon as the aircraft door was open. My view remains that Coronavirus is no more of a threat than the flu and so we took the same precautions we normally would on the plane, in the airport and in Vietnam - washing hands well before eating. Aside from a 1 hour queue to clear passport control, Ho Chi Minh airport was very pleasant - large, clean, an area airside where you could exchange money (at remarkably fair rates) and get your local sim cards (ridiculously cheap) before leaving the airport. But even outside there were very few hawkers etc - largely we were just ignored/left alone, which was extremely pleasant compared to some SE Asian airports we've arrived in. Temperature was warm but not too muggy, though we weren't long outside until we checked in at the domestic terminal for our next flight to Nha Trang. Again, all very pleasant and easy. The Vietnamese people seem very pleasant if a little stand-offish but there is a very significant language barrier with even the tourist workers being far from fluent in English. After our first experience of noodles for breakfast we boarded our 3rd flight in 18 hours. The plane was nearly empty - the Coronavirus has hit Vietnam hard - a combination of the ban on Chinese tourists and reluctant Western ones means the Vietnamese economy has taken a significant hit so far this year. A quick nap on the flight to Nha Trang and we'd probably done enough to see us through till evening.
